Frequently asked questions

What exactly is the Marriage Certificate?

It is an official document issued by the Civil Registry that certifies the celebration of a marriage. Unlike the family book, this certificate is an updated extract from the Registry that includes all relevant marginal annotations (such as divorces or subsequent separations) and has full legal validity for any administrative or judicial procedure.

Why do I need a Marriage Certificate?+

It is required for multiple legal and administrative procedures:

  • Divorce or legal separation proceedings
  • Inheritances, wills, and notarial deeds
  • Applications for Spanish or foreign nationality
  • Processing visas and residence permits
  • National and international adoptions
  • Procedures with Social Security and pensions
  • Purchase and sale of real estate under community property regime
  • Changes of marital status in official documents
Can I request the Marriage Certificate completely online?+

Yes, you can manage the entire process 100% electronically without needing to go in person to the Civil Registry. By completing our online form, we handle processing your request directly with the corresponding Registry and deliver the certificate in digital format or physically to your home.

This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from any device with an internet connection.

How long does it take to issue the certificate?+

The issuance time varies according to the workload of each Civil Registry, but generally ranges between 3 and 15 business days from when the request is submitted.

Civil Registries of large cities usually take longer (10-15 days), while those of smaller populations can be faster (3-7 days). If you have requested the Apostille of the Hague, add 3-5 additional business days for this procedure.

We will keep you informed of the status of your request at all times.

What is the difference between the literal and multilingual certificate?+

Literal Certificate: includes all complete data of the marriage registration in Spanish, with all marginal annotations. It is the most complete and required for most procedures in Spain (divorces, inheritances, notaries).

Multilingual Certificate: is an international format issued in several official languages that facilitates use in other countries without the need for sworn translation. It is ideal for procedures abroad, although for some countries the Apostille of the Hague is also required.

What is the Apostille of the Hague and when do I need it?+

The Apostille of the Hague is a legalization stamp that certifies the authenticity of public documents for use in countries that signed the 1961 Hague Convention (more than 120 countries).

You need the Apostille if you are going to use the certificate in:

  • European Union countries for certain specific procedures
  • United States, Canada, Australia
  • Most Latin American countries
  • Many countries in Asia and Africa

For countries that did not sign the Convention, consular legalization is required. Consult with us if you have questions about your specific case.

What information do I need to request the certificate?+

To process your marriage certificate you will need to provide:

  • Full names and surnames of both spouses
  • Date of birth of both spouses
  • Exact date of the marriage celebration
  • Municipality and province where the marriage took place
  • Registry data if you know them: Volume, Folio, Page (optional but speeds up the procedure)

If you do not have all this information, do not worry. Our team can help you locate the missing information by contacting the corresponding Civil Registry.

Can I request the certificate if I got married abroad?+

Yes, as long as your marriage is registered in the Spanish Civil Registry. Marriages celebrated abroad must be registered in the corresponding Consular Civil Registry or, after returning to Spain, in the Central Civil Registry.

If your marriage is not yet registered in Spain, you must first complete this procedure before being able to request the certificate. We can advise you on how to proceed in your specific case.

How many copies of the certificate can I request?+

You can request up to 3 copies of the same certificate in a single procedure. This is useful when you need to submit the document to several institutions simultaneously (for example, court, notary, and bank).

If you need the Apostille of the Hague, you can also request up to 3 apostilled copies of the same certificate.

Does the certificate have an expiration date?+

The marriage certificate itself does not expire, as it is a certification of an event that occurred on a specific date. However, many institutions and organizations require the certificate to have a recent issue date.

Most procedures require the certificate to have been issued within the last 3 to 6 months. Therefore, it is always recommended to request it when you actually need it, not too far in advance.

Is it safe to send my personal data over the internet?+

Absolutely. Our platform uses 256-bit SSL encryption, the same level of security that banks use for online transactions. Additionally, we strictly comply with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Your personal data is protected, never shared with third parties without your express consent, and only used to manage your certificate request. You can consult our Privacy Policy for more details.

What payment methods do you accept?+

We accept the main online payment methods:

  • Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express)
  • Bank transfer
  • PayPal
  • Bizum

All payments are processed through secure certified payment gateways with the highest security standards (PCI DSS).

What information do you need?+
The date and place of the marriage and the spouses' details. With this, we can locate the record in the corresponding Civil Registry.
What about marriages held outside Spain?+
If the marriage is registered with the Spanish Central Civil Registry, we can obtain the certificate. If it is not registered, we will advise you on the prior registration process.
How long does it take?+
Anywhere from a few days to 2-3 weeks depending on the issuing Registry, with active follow-up on our part.
Do documents signed online have the same validity as those signed in person?+
Exactly the same. Law 11/2023 recognises the full legal validity of notarial documents executed by video call with a qualified electronic signature before a registered notary.
Do I need a digital certificate?+
Yes, to sign electronically you need a digital certificate or an electronic DNI. If you do not have one, we help you obtain it quickly before your appointment, with no additional handling fee.
Can I do it from abroad?+
Yes, the notarial video call works from any country. You only need a stable connection, your valid identity document and a digital certificate.
How much does this service cost?+
The quote includes the official notarial fees set by the Notarial Association plus our handling, fixed before you start and with no hidden costs. Request it with no obligation via WhatsApp or the form.
What if I have questions during the process?+
Our team supports you from start to finish via WhatsApp, phone or email, and the notary answers all your legal questions before signing.
