What is the difference between NIF and NIE?−
The NIE is the Foreigner Identification Number assigned by the National Police. The NIF is the tax identifier before the Treasury. For foreign citizens, their NIE functions as NIF preceded by X, Y, or Z according to the year of assignment.
Can I get the NIF without traveling to Spain?+
Yes, by granting a notarial power of attorney to a representative in Spain (can be notarized in your country and apostilled). The representative will submit the application on your behalf to the AEAT.
How long does it take to obtain the NIF?+
The process takes between 2 and 5 business days from when documentation is complete and submitted to the Tax Agency. If you require power of attorney from abroad, add 2-3 additional days.
What documents do I need to apply for the NIF?+
Valid passport, completed form 030, justification for the application (purchase contract, inheritance certificate, etc.) and notarial power of attorney if acting through a representative.
Does the NIF expire?+
No, the NIF is permanent and does not expire. Once obtained, you can use it indefinitely for all your tax and legal operations in Spain.
How much does it cost to obtain the NIF?+
Obtaining the NIF from the AEAT is free (no fees). The costs are our management and representation fees. If you require notarial power of attorney, notary and apostille costs are added.
Do I need to be registered in Spain to get the NIF?+
No, registration or residence in Spain is not necessary. The NIF is granted to any foreigner with justified economic interest in the country, whether or not they reside there.
What reasons justify applying for a NIF?+
Real estate purchases, inheritance acceptance, company formation, opening bank accounts, investments, receiving income, economic activity, or any act with tax implications in Spain.
Can I apply for the NIF of a foreign company?+
Yes, legal entities (companies) incorporated outside Spain can obtain a NIF if they operate or invest in Spanish territory. The procedure is similar but requires apostilled corporate documentation.
Is the NIF mandatory to buy real estate in Spain?+
Yes, it is mandatory. The notary cannot authorize a purchase deed if the foreign buyer does not have a NIF. It must be obtained before signing.
Are the NIF and NIE the same thing?+
No. The NIE is the foreigner identity number (issued by the Ministry of the Interior); the NIF is the tax number (issued by the Tax Agency). For foreign individuals, they usually coincide, but foreign companies need their own NIF. We'll guide you based on your specific case.
