Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a Single Status Sworn Statement?

It is a notarial document in which you voluntarily declare, under oath before a notary, that you are not married and have no current marital bond. It has full legal validity in Spain.

Unlike the civil status certificate issued by the Civil Registry (which is an administrative document), the notarial single status certificate is a personal declaration that the notary raises to public status, granting immediate public faith.

Is the Single Status Certificate valid for getting married in Spain?+

Yes, the Single Status Sworn Statement is fully valid for starting the marriage file in Spain. Courts and Civil Registries accept it as proof of single civil status.

It is especially useful when you need to speed up the process and cannot wait for the Civil Registry to issue the updated literal birth certificate or civil status certificate, which can take several weeks.

Can I use this certificate to get married abroad?+

It depends on the country where you are going to get married. Many countries accept the duly apostilled Single Status Sworn Statement according to the Hague Convention.

We recommend consulting with the consulate or competent authority of the destination country about what specific documentation they require. We advise you on the usual requirements of the main countries and handle the apostille if you need it.

What is the difference between the notarial certificate and the Civil Registry certificate?+

The Civil Registry certificate is an official administrative document issued by the Registry with data recorded in its books. It can take days or weeks to obtain.

The Single Status Sworn Statement is a personal declaration before a notary that has the value of an immediate public document. It is obtained in less than 24 hours and has the same legal validity for most procedures.

Both documents are valid, but the notarial certificate is much faster to obtain when you're in a hurry.

What documents do I need to request the Single Status Certificate?+

The requirements are minimal:

  • Valid identification document: DNI, NIE, or valid passport
  • Digital certificate or Cl@ve: to electronically sign the certificate (we help you obtain it if you don't have it)
  • Internet connection: for the video call with the notary

You don't need to submit any other additional documents. The single status declaration is based on your voluntary statement under oath.

How long does it take for the Single Status Certificate to be ready?+

The complete process is completed in less than 24 hours from when you send the documentation:

  • Document review: 2-4 hours
  • Certificate drafting by notary: 2-4 hours
  • Video call and signature: 15 minutes (scheduled at your convenience)
  • Document delivery: immediate after signing

If you need an apostille for international use, that additional procedure can take 2-5 business days depending on the competent body's workload.

Does the Single Status Certificate have an expiration date?+

The notarial certificate itself doesn't expire, as it certifies a declaration made at a specific moment. However, its practical validity depends on the organization requesting it.

For marriage files in Spain, it is generally accepted if less than 3 months old. For international procedures, some countries require it to be less than 6 months or even less than 90 days old.

We recommend requesting the certificate as close as possible to the date you need to submit it to avoid validity issues.

Can I request the Single Status Certificate from abroad?+

Yes, you can process your Single Status Sworn Statement completely from abroad. You only need:

  • Stable internet connection for the video call with the notary
  • Your valid Spanish identification document (DNI, NIE, or Spanish passport)
  • Digital certificate or Cl@ve for electronic signing

The process is 100% online, so it doesn't matter what country you're in. You have the virtual appearance with the notary and receive the document via certified email.

Do I need witnesses for the Single Status Certificate?+

No, for the Single Status Sworn Statement witnesses are not required. It is a personal declaration you make directly before the notary.

The notary attests to your identity, that you have appeared voluntarily, and that you have declared under oath your single status. This is sufficient for the document to have full legal validity.

How much does the online Single Status Sworn Statement cost?+

The price includes:

  • Certificate drafting by licensed notary
  • Video call and online appearance
  • Electronic signature of the document
  • Issuance of certified certificate
  • Personalized advice throughout the process

For the exact price with no obligation, complete the contact form and we will send you a personalized quote based on your specific needs. If you need an apostille, we also quote that additional service.

What if I'm divorced or widowed? Can I declare single status?+

No, the Single Status Certificate is exclusively for people who have never been married. If you have been previously married:

  • If you're divorced: you need a divorce certificate or final divorce judgment
  • If you're widowed: you need the death certificate of your spouse and marriage certificate

In these cases, you can request a different Civil Status Sworn Statement, where you declare your current situation (divorced or widowed) and provide supporting documentation. We can also help you with this procedure.

Is it legal and safe to do this procedure online?+

Yes, it is completely legal and safe. Online notarial procedures are fully regulated by Law 24/2001 and the regulations of the General Council of Notaries.

We work exclusively with licensed notaries in Spain authorized to perform notarial acts via video conference. The electronically signed certificate has exactly the same legal validity as if you had signed it in person at a physical notary office.

Additionally, we use data encryption systems, advanced electronic signatures, and strictly comply with GDPR to protect your personal information at all times.

Do I need an apostille?+
If the certificate will be used outside Spain, you usually do. We can arrange the Hague Apostille as part of the same order.
Can it be issued in two languages?+
Yes, we offer a deed drawn up in Spanish and English within the same document, which is very useful for international use.
What documents do I need?+
A valid ID document and, depending on the destination, a birth certificate or proof of residence. We'll confirm the exact requirements during the first call.
Do documents signed online have the same validity as those signed in person?+
Exactly the same. Law 11/2023 recognises the full legal validity of notarial documents executed by video call with a qualified electronic signature before a registered notary.
Do I need a digital certificate?+
Yes, to sign electronically you need a digital certificate or an electronic DNI. If you do not have one, we help you obtain it quickly before your appointment, with no additional handling fee.
Can I do it from abroad?+
Yes, the notarial video call works from any country. You only need a stable connection, your valid identity document and a digital certificate.
How much does this service cost?+
The quote includes the official notarial fees set by the Notarial Association plus our handling, fixed before you start and with no hidden costs. Request it with no obligation via WhatsApp or the form.
What if I have questions during the process?+
Our team supports you from start to finish via WhatsApp, phone or email, and the notary answers all your legal questions before signing.
